Dingo (disambiguation)
A dingo or ''Canis lupus dingo'' (there are currently two separate articles on this subspecies, one by its common name and one by its taxonomic name) or 'true wild dogs' (see Free-ranging dogs) is a type of wild dog found in Australia and Southeast Asia, however the term 'dingo' is used both to distinguish taxonomically related varieties and in reference to their partial descendants and also used as part of the common name of many varieties which may taxonomically be classified under ''Canis lupus familiaris'' or elsewhere. In the List of Canis species and subspecies, 'C. lupus dingo (dingo)' appears as a subspecies of 'C. lupus' as does the domestic dog, hence one reason why some 'dog' varieties may be called 'dingo' and some 'dingo' varieties may be called 'dog', especially in their common names.
There are numerous taxonomic sub-subspecies of 'dingoes', some of which do not always use 'dingo' in their most popular common names, for example, the New Guinea singing dog (NGSD), ''Canis (lupus) dingo hallstromi'' (Troughton, 1957), though among its common name synonyms is 'bush dingo'.
And as a common name, for example, the Carolina Dog, a free-range dog (non-technically sometimes called 'wild') of the Southeastern United States is also called the 'American Dingo'.
